Dear , Quick question: When someone asks you what you do, how do you
answer? Just so you know... If you go on and on about the ins and outs of your business... how long you've been doing it... all the different things that make you feel "validated" by your work, etc., etc from the first second., I have news for you: You're Doing It All Wrong! Consider the first words out of your mouth like the headline of an ad: it must be attention-grabbing and concise. You must be able to convey what
you do in one sentence. No more. This is what we refer to as an elevator pitch. Any longer than one sentence and you'll lose the other person, especially if it's your first time meeting them. So, when someone asks me about the Coptic Chamber, I reply:
"We help Coptic business owners connect, grow and succeed." (One short, succinct sentence.) From there, if I get the follow up question of, "Wow, that sounds interesting, tell me more..." or "I didn't know there were that many Coptic business owners," then I know I've hooked them. Then I can elaborate.
And,
what about you?
What's your (one-sentence) elevator speech when someone asks you what do you do? P.S. You don't want to make your elevator speech too short, either. Saying, 'I'm a Realtor" doesn't say enough. It's better to say, "I'm a Realtor in Atlanta who helps takes the hassle
out of buying or selling a home. And if the follow up is, "How do you do that?" You've succeeded! Until next time... As always, K.I.C.
