Ask Yourself this Question:
When people meet you for the first time, what impression do you leave when you walk away?
1. 'Wow, I couldn't wait for that to be over!"
2. "He/She is so pleasant...what a nice person... I really enjoyed that!"
3. You leave no impression at all.
4. Somewhere in-between any of the above.
People sometimes don't realize the vibe they give off. Even though you might meet someone who seems unfriendly and standoffish, they might be the nicest person, the kind of person who is trustworthy in business and ethical. Just the kind of person you want to do business with. The problem is, because their outward expressions aren't necessarily inviting, you might never get to know them beyond the first meeting.
The solution? Try to be aware of the vibe you give people. How do people react around you? What do they say? Are they engaging you in conversation? Are you talking about yourself the entire time?
These are tough questions to ask yourself.
If you're not that in tune with yourself, ask those who know you best what they think. Tell them to be honest with you (and don't get upset when they are). Ask them how you can be more approachable? What will make people enjoy conversation with you more?
It's hard for us to be brutally honest with ourselves (and hear honesty from others, no less), but it's absolutely necessary if we want to make more connections and grow our business.
Take their feedback and work on your approach with people. It's more impactful then you realize.
And if you have no issues in this department, excellent. You definitely have a leg up!
Ultimately, we all do business with people we know, like and trust.
The good news is, you CAN change things about yourself and be more aware. I've helped many business owners with this skill and the results have been dramatic, to say the least.
