Do you know why Disney is so successful?
No, i'ts not because of Mickey.
No, it's not because of Goofy.
No, It's not because they have cool rides.
And, no, it's not because of all those great hotels.
The reason Disney is successful is because they create...
Magic!
You see, when you visit Walt Disney World, you leave with a feeling. It's not something you buy in one of their gift shops. It's something you experience... it's something that touches you on the inside... and... it sticks.
Who doesn't remember the first time they visited Walt Disney World (assuming you weren't in a stroller!).
Let me share this story with you.
When my boys were about 5 and 7 years old (over 10 years ago), my family and I went to Disney World around Christmas time. (If you've been there during that time you know the place is totally decked out in Christmas decorations.)
While we were walking, my younger son Dimitri noticed a young boy wearing a glow-in-the-dark Buzz Lightyear necklace that caught his attention.
Make that he became obsessed with it!
"Mommy, daddy, I want one of those!"
10 Seconds Later...
"Mommy, daddy, I want one of those!"
Another 10 Seconds Later...
"Mommy, daddy, pleeeeease get me one those!"
Yet Another 10 Seconds Later...
You get the idea.
The problem is, we looked ALL OVER THE PLACE and no Buzz glow-in-the-dark necklace.
Finally, trying to avoid a total meltdown, we approached one of the Disney store workers and asked if they had any more of the necklaces.
The young lady was gone for a good 10 minutes, apologized profusely for the wait, and then broke the news: They were completely sold out.
She asked for our address and promised to send us one as soon as they get a new shipment.
And that was that. Dimitri was disappointed, but eventually he got over it (honestly, I don't really remember -- we may have bribed him :).
We returned home and forgot all about it until about a week later:
A Package from Disney
Arrived at the House
To our amazement, there it was... the glow in the dark Buzz necklace (we had never paid for it, they refused payment).
Not only that. There was a handwritten card from Buzz apologizing to Dimitri for not being around when he visited.
If that weren't enough, there were about 5 photos of the Buzz necklace in various poses at Disney World. He was standing next to Mickey and then Minnie... he was riding It's a Small World... he was "eating" an ice cream cone and doing a few other things.
Wow!
Needless to say, Dimitri couldn't stop looking at the pictures as he himself was glowing for days after that.
Plus, there were some other goodies in the box.
Do you think that left an impression on him? Of course.
Do you think the memory of that day makes him feel all warm and fuzzy inside? It does.
The feelings... the impressions... the emotions and memories you create for your customers, thought can't be directly measured, are some of the greatest tools you ever have in building a business.
Be memorable... be different... create an "experience."
This reminds of when I was practicing law regularly. I made it a habit of walking my clients out to the elevator after our appointment.
They were always surprised I took the time to do that.
And sometimes, if I really wanted to blow them away, I'd even...
Walk Them Out to Their Car!
Guess what kind of feeling that gave my clients?
Often when I received referrals, clients would tell me they heard I walked clients to their cars.
I'd just smile and tell them I treat every client like they are a member of my family. (And I meant that.)
That's what I call going the extra mile. Leave customers an incomparable feeling and you'll have raving fans for life.
