Dear ,
What if I said to you, "Your presentation was one of the best I've ever heard!"
Or...
"I'm so impressed with the way you negotiated that deal."
Or even...
"Wow, those are some cool glasses you have on!"
Some people don't know how to respond to compliments; it can make them feel uncomfortable.
Despite that, in general...
Complimenting Someone Is One of the
Easiest Ways to Break the Ice and Develop Rapport
I'm always surprised when I'm in a social setting or a business networking function and don't see more people using a compliment as an opening line.
It's virtually a sure thing!
It's a great way to start a conversation and slip into other topics.
But keep three things in mind related to compliments:
1. Make sure your compliment is genuine. The last thing you want to do is compliment someone from a place of insincerity -- lack of authenticity is very easy to spot.
2. There IS such thing as overkill. Don't start firing off every complimentary word you know all at once. Be tempered.
3. Also, be honed in when you give a compliment. If the other person tries to deflect or appears uneasy, then simply move on to another topic. While most people respond well to compliments, a small slice of the population, for whatever reason, will freeze up. Watch the facial expression and body language and respond accordingly.
