There's a lot about me you don't know.
Most of you only know me as the Coptic Chamber guy. Or the Global Coptic Day guy.
But the fact is, for almost 20, I have been helping business -- all types of businesses (professional practices, small businesses, entrepreneurs) increase their profits and boost their bottom line. I have a whole host of tools I use to do that, including direct mail.
(Yes, old-fashioned direct mail where you write a letter or a postcard, lick a stamp and drop it in the mail. Over the years, I have made clients TENS OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS (no exaggeration) just by using direct mail. I know -- hard to believe, but it's true.
And you know what one of the absolute BIGGEST keys in direct mail is?
You Have to Get the Envelope Opened!
Sounds like common sense, right? Well, believe me, most people haven't a clue on how to do that properly. Even companies that mail thousands or tens of thousands of pieces of mail a month don't know what I'm about to tell you.
So, there are actually quite a few secrets on how to arouse curiosity so that the person who receives a letter will rush to rip open the envelope and read the contents.
One of these (legit, bona fide) secrets is to...
Use a Real Live First Class Stamp --
Preferably Find a Stamp That
Looks Unusual or Is Uncommon
But never use a metered stamp because that screams JUNK MAIL and people will toss that away faster than you can blink.
The secret is to find actual "live" stamps that are abnormally shaped and that are commemorative (like Elvis or the First Moon Landing, etc.), and use them for your mailing. Another secret is to use multiple stamps (if possible) if your mail piece weighs over a dollar or two instead of just one expensive stamp.
Believe it or not, the more unusual your stamps, and the more stamps you use, the better chance you have of getting your envelope opened. And, once your letter is opened, it's up to your contents to do the selling for you.
Direct mail is a numbers game. If you do everything possible to increase the likelihood of getting your letter opened, read and acted on, there's a good chance you'll come out on top. Many FORTUNES have been made using direct mail.
If you have any type of service business (legal, medical, CPA, real estate, mortgage broker, financial advisor, etc.) or if you have a restaurant, gym or pharmacy, (brick and mortar business) and you're NOT using direct mail (or doing it properly), you are missing a potential gold mine. Trust me when I tell you.

P.S. I did a direct mail campaign for a bankruptcy lawyer several years ago. This is the email he frantically sent me once the calls started coming in: “Sorry for the delayed response but you are killing me with all the new business. We are busting at the seams and all my employees are freaking out. We filed 100 (bankruptcies) for October and we have already filed 30 (bankruptcies) so far in November. That is a huge head start for November
considering that it is only the 2nd (of November).”
All I did was write one little letter for him.
