Dear ,
I'm often asked who has had the biggest impact on my business life.
The answer is simple. It's my father. He passed away in 2001, but I still hear his sage advice in my ear practically every day.
One day soon, I'll tell you more about him. But one of his many gifts was being able to survey a situation... look at the big picture... and then anticipate what other people would do and how they would react.
This generally put him in a pre-eminent position when negotiating or working on complex real estate deals.
To this day, I'm amazed at how he was able to ROUTINELY lock in million-dollar properties for 90 days (sometimes longer) with only $5,000 down (I have personally witnessed him do it!). It's remarkable how he worked -- and sellers were all too happy to meet his terms. It was a gift for sure.
Of course, he didn't acquire this ability overnight; it came with years of experience. I consider myself extremely fortunate to have seen him in action.
Keep Yourself Ahead of the Game
So the lesson I want to share with you today is the importance of anticipating the next step in any situation, particularly a business situation.
Whether you're analyzing your own actions...
Whether you''re involved in any type of negotiation...
Whether you're navigating your own multi-million dollar business deal...
The idea is to think two, three and even five steps ahead and consider the possibilities. ALL the possibilities, even some that might sound off the wall. Try to gain that mindset because it provides you with solutions and options that others probably wouldn't have thought of.
You'll gain the advantage.
In many ways, business, negotiating and deal making are a game of chess. The person with the better strategy of offense, defense and anticipation wins.
The truth is, this skill can apply to so many things outside of business as well. Developing it will keep you sharp and engaged. The key is to develop and hone it so that, over time, it becomes second nature.
Until next time...
