Dear ,
About 20 years ago, I struck up a conversation with a gray-haired gentleman at my local
Kinko's/FedEx. He was unusually friendly and quite talkative.
I was practicing law back then and had just started dabbling in legal marketing. He asked what I did and I gave him my usual elevator speech.
Half way through, he asked me abruptly:
"Want to Be on TV?"
I asked him to repeat it because I thought surely he didn't just say what I thought he said.
Sure enough, he did.
I found out that he hosted a local cable show called
the "Business Exchange." in Fort Lauderdale. I guess somehow, some way, I had impressed him and he wanted me on my show.
To this day, I have no idea why.
I told him I'd like to think about it (I had never been on TV before -- so understandably I was hesitant) and would get back to him the next
day.
The Next Day I Called Him...
I agreed to be interviewed on his local TV show where I talked mainly about being an Egyptian lawyer and how I market myself (you can see the pic above of me -- sans goatee --
and him deep in discussion). Keep in mind, this is more than 20 years ago.
The rest as they say is history.
Hundreds of national TV, radio and media interviews later, I look back at that one media opportunity as a pivotal moment in my career. Not because of all the business I got out of it (I honestly don't recall even one person calling me
after the segment aired) but because it was a springboard for what was to come. Had I said no, who knows what roads I would have been blocking.
So, Why Am I Telling You All This?
I'm sharing this information with you for two reasons:
1. Getting media exposure is much easier than you think it is (of course there are some secrets and tricks of the trade, but it's not as "impossible" as some people think). It's not difficult and can really boost your business and personal profile. I hope to tell you more about this soon; and
2.
Sometimes we have to step outside of our comfort zone to grow. That's what happened to me. I was uncomfortable initially with the idea of appearing on TV, not having had any prior experience. But I did it anyway because I didn't want to pass up the opportunity.
If you're interested in seeing more of my media clips, interview, articles, etc., let me know. I'd be happy to share them with you.
