Dear ,
On February 23, 2001, I grabbed a cotton blanket and headed to the beach in East Fort
Lauderdale, FL for what would become a defining moment in my life.
There's a little beach spot with small, cozy shops in the town of Lauderdale-By-The-Sea.
I'd been to that exact spot a million times before -- saw the same towering palm trees, felt the same grainy sand underneath my
feet, smelled the familiar ocean water air -- but nothing had prepared me for this moment.
As I Gazed Out At the Sunset...
I found myself in an unusual state of awareness.
Why do I remember this day in particular? Because exactly one week later, my older son Michael was born.
Just as I watched wave after wave cascade perfectly onto the sand, the moment had arrived.
I began drafting a contract with myself mentally, promising that I would do whatever it took to put my family in the best position possible spiritually, financially, academically and socially. I even said the words out loud and signed my name in the air.
It really wasn't something I had planned on doing, it just happened naturally. I remember it like it was
yesterday.
With a son on the way, I knew life was about to change and so did my motivation for success.
It was at that moment that I realized...
If I Wanted to Be Successful
Financially,
I Had to Look Outside Myself
Listen, we all "hustle"... we all put in the grind... but those who have a drive based on something other than just getting "rich" seem to be the ones who get there.
You know, rarely does a day pass that I don't reflect on that beach day. It's such a forceful and impactful moment that continues to drive me.
But I don't want to make this message about me -- it's really about you:
What's your end game?
Who/What are you busting your hump for?
What's driving you?
It doesn't necessarily have to be about family or kids. There are many other things that can drive you to accomplishment.
If you don't have answers that are satisfactory to you yet, keep working on it. Sometimes it comes to you when you least expect it... and... sometimes your deep passion will immediately reveal it.
But, make no mistake, our lives as business owners aren't easy. They're filled with daily challenges and obstacles that seem to come out of nowhere.
Every single day.
But a true entrepreneur wouldn't have it any other way.
After all, as they say:
Entrepreneurs are the people who will work 80 hours a week to avoid working 40 hours a week.
Whatever your business, just make sure you have that private beach moment with yourself, dig deep to find and connect with your
inspiration. Without it, you're running around just trying to earn a buck. And that's all it is. With it, you have rudder guidance that keeps you accountable, inspired and focused.
