Dear ,
About 20 years ago, I was asked a question by one of my mentors.
He asked me:
Why Do You Work?
I thought that was a weird question. I replied, to make money.
Right. And why else, he asked?
I said, that's pretty much it. Once I had money, I could do lots of things with it. But, mainly, I work to make money.
So, he paused. And then he continued...
You don't work because it's exhilarating?
You don't work because it gives you discipline?
You don't work because it puts a smile on your face?
You don't work because you encounter challenges... and when you overcome them... it gives you a sense of victory?
Have you lost sight of how magnificent work is?
Wow. I hadn't really thought about all of that. He helped me view work in a totally different light. Rather than work being an annoying chore, I began to see it as a welcomed thrill.
I couldn't believe work gave me all this -- it was all right in front of my eyes -- but I couldn't see it.
He also warned me that not all work will have the same payoff: If I didn't wake up in the morning looking forward to taking on the day, then one of two things had to change: Either my attitude or my line of work. If you don't love what you do, it will show in your work. There's no hiding it.
So, I guess the message for today and the weekend is, I hope you can elevate your business to the level that you still get a thrill out of work. It will improve your life in so many ways.
Have a great weekend.
