Dear ,
By now, you've heard that recently, Elon Musk, Tesla Founder and richest man in the world, recently bought a 9.2% state in Twitter for an estimated $2.9 billion.
That's chump change for Elon.
With the purchase came a ton of attention, PR and media features. Nice move (don't think for a second that he is not strategically making moves to gain as much media coverage as possible). Besides it being a business move to purchase the Twitter stake, it enhances his personal brand, as well as elevates his companies' brands.
But, that's not all. Mr. Space X just offered to buy ALL of Twitter for a whopping $43 billion, asserting a position that he wants to make it privately-held and remove (or lessen) restrictions on free speech.
The media pretty much went ballistic. (This guy sure knows how to steal a media cycle.)
So, What Does This All Mean to YOU?
In terms of PR, getting the media to notice you, even chase after you, is much easier than you think.
One of the strategies I teach is to "Go After a Big Dog" and hold a controversial position. This isn't exactly what Elon did but it's close enough. He targeted Twitter and held a "controversial" position of wanting to promote free speech.
Heads exploded.
You can do that same: Find a "Big Dog" (can be an institution, company, member of the media, public figure, etc.) and take a contrary position to what's being espoused. And, almost like magic, you'll be amazed at the amount of press you can get.
Over the last 30 years, I've used this strategy (and some others) to amass close to $10 million in free publicity. I'll give you some examples in an upcoming email (after the Resurrection Feast).
My point is, if I can do it, so can you.
Have a great weekend, Palm Sunday and Holy Week.
P.S. The Tweet by USA Today above was one of literally hundreds of media features and mentions I received within a month span in 2015. Ah... the stories I can tell!
Until next time...
